چکیده

T he Hip-Abduction, KneeExtension Orthosis (HA, KE) is designed to aid in preventing or correcting deformities in spastic hip abductor and hamstring muscles when stretching and exercise do not suffice. Spasticity in this group of muscles is not uncommon in paraplegia or in other selected diseases of the central nervous system-for example, in multiple sclerosis. The orthosis consists of bila teral knee extension splints separated by three dowels progressing in length distally (Figures I and 2). The major objecti ve in the design of this orthosis, unlike commercially available splints that stretch only the hip abductor muscles, is to stretch both the hip abductor and knee flexor muscles. :\Iuscle relaxation can result from the acti vity of the golgi tendon organ, which resides in the tendon of the m LI cleo Physiologist Guyton states, "When tension on a muscle and there(ore on the tendon becomes extreme, the inhibitory effect of the golgi tendon organ can be so great that it causes sudden relaxation of the entire muscle." (l, p 165) Another objective for the orthosis is to provide a device that can be mana ed independelllly by the patient. The relative compactness and lightness of the orthosis make this possible.

Changes in joint kinematics in children with cerebral palsy while walking with and without a floor reaction ankle-foot orthosis.

INTRODUCTION The floor reaction ankle-foot orthosis is commonly prescribed in the attempt to decrease knee flexion during the stance phase in the cerebral palsy (CP) gait. Reported information about this type of orthosis is insufficient. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of clinically prescribed floor reaction ankle-foot orthosis on kinematic parameters of the hip,...

Relationship between hip and knee strength and knee valgus during a single leg squat.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between hip and knee strength, and valgus knee motion during a single leg squat. Thirty healthy adults (15 men, 15 women) stood on their preferred foot, squatted to approximately 60 deg of knee flexion, and returned to the standing position. Frontal plane knee motion was evaluated using 3-D motion analysis. During Session 2, isokinetic...

Preswing knee flexion assistance is coupled with hip abduction in people with stiff-knee gait after stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Stiff-knee gait is defined as reduced knee flexion during the swing phase. It is accompanied by frontal plane compensatory movements (eg, circumduction and hip hiking) typically thought to result from reduced toe clearance. As such, we examined if knee flexion assistance before foot-off would reduce exaggerated frontal plane movements in people with stiff-knee gait after ...

Effect of abduction and external rotation of the hip joint on muscle onset time during prone hip extension with knee flexion

[Purpose] This study investigated the effect of hip position on muscle onset time during prone hip extension with knee flexion. [Subjects] The study included 21 healthy male volunteers. [Methods] Muscle onset times of the right gluteus maximus, right hamstrings, bilateral lumbar erector spinae, and bilateral lumbar multifidus were measured using surface electromyography during right hip extensi...

Influence of Hip Joint Position on Muscle Activity during Prone Hip Extension with Knee Flexion

[Purpose] This study investigated the selective activation of the gluteus maximus during a prone hip extension with knee flexion exercise, with the hip joint in different positions. [Subjects] The subjects were 21 healthy, male volunteers. [Methods] Activities of the right gluteus maximus, right hamstrings, bilateral lumbar erector spinae, and bilateral lumbar multifidus were measured using sur...
